Union Veterans Council Executive Director Will Attig: House NDAA will help support transitioning service members and their families

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Union Veterans Council Executive Director Will Attig released the following statement in response to the news that the House passed amendment 524 to the National Defense Authorization Act.

“The Union Veterans Council commends the bi-partisan work of Rep. Conor Lamb (D-PA) and Rep.Mike Bost(R-IL), which led Congress to pass an amendment to the NDAA yesterday that will make it possible for members of the U.S. Coast Guard to access the DoD’s SkillBridge program. This measure closes a loophole to allow members of the Coast Guard and their families to access the SkillBridge program, which is a proven, high-quality program that creates career pathways for transitioning service members and their families.

“As veterans and transitioning service members face rising unemployment and risk of harm to mental and physical health due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever to ensure that this community has access to quality career opportunities. As a country, we must do everything in our power to support those who have served this country through this tough time and the Union Veterans Council calls on Congress to continue doing everything it can to do so.

“Union Veterans Council would like to offer special thanks to Representative Conor Lamb for championing this issue and offering the amendment. It was his dedication and passion that made this vote possible.

“We encourage the Senate to adopt this measure as well once the House passes the full NDAA.”
